History of FC Bayern Munchen
History of FC Bayern Munchen
FC Bayern Munich is a German sports club based in Munich, Germany. It is known for its football and basketball teams. Here is a brief overview of the club's history and how it got to where it is today…
History
Bayern Munich was founded in the 1900s by 11 footballers with its leader being Frnaz John (a famous German football player). Bayern quickly became a high-scoring team and won most of their games. Between 1910/11 Bayern decided to join “Kreisliga” which was a newly founded Bavarian league. By 1920, they had over 700 members making it the largest football club in Munich. The basketball team was created in 1946.
The team's most successful years were in the 1950s and 1960s winning the German championship two times and the German cup. The club slowly went downhill and in 1974 was relegated to the second division. Bayern wasn’t able to recover completely from this relegation. They moved up for 1 year and then got relegated again in 1989. In 2008, their new team goal was to return to the club's former glory. Finally, in the 2012/13 season, they reached the semi-finals but unfortunately, they lost. They became a wild card in the 2013/14 season and it was their first appearance at the top of the European championship. They won under coach Svetislav Pesic.
Influence of WW2
The basketball team of FC Bayern Munich had not been established but the football team had during World War 2. The rise of Hitler paused the development of the Bayern club before 1946. The club president at the time and many footballers were Jewish. They were taunted as “the Jews club” and their rivals started gaining support from former Bayern fans. There was clear discrimination during and after WW2. For many years after the war, the number of fans (basketball, and football) was drastically low. The basketball club was formed the year after the war ended but still dealt with the aftermath.
Audi Dome Arena
FC Bayern Munich's home arena is the Audi Dome. Originally created for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich then later (2011) became the home of FC Bayern Munich. The dome offers space for 7,200 fans and includes a restaurant and warm-up of the hall. Red Bull Ice Hockey and Bayern Munich sought out a more modern stadium and decided to begin working on SAP Garden. A new stadium that can host 12,000 fans and sponsor by SAP (a german software company). SAP Garden is on the outside of the former Olympic village making it easily accessible and a new space for their fans. It will be ready to host games in Spring of 2024.
Latest Success
The club's return to prominence was confirmed by consecutive German Championships in 2018, and 2019. While also coming in second in the EuroLeague Playoffs. The hiring of Coach Andrea Trinchieri sparked huge success, and they enjoyed their best season ever reaching the playoffs and forcing Milan into a five-game thriller. Bayern came to a win away from the Final Four in 2022 again losing to FC Barcelona.

Great blog post! It's really interesting to learn about the key figures behind FC Bayern Munich and how they have contributed to the team's success over the years. The information about Marko Pesic and Herbert Hainer's backgrounds and experiences in sports management and business provide good insights into how the team is being run. To answer you question about FC Bayern's future performance, I think that FC Bayern Munich has a strong history of success and a talented team of players, coaches, and management. With the right strategies, training, and support, there's no reason why they can't continue to perform well on the court in the future. Do you think FC Bayern will soon consistent success in the Euroleague?
ReplyDeleteI do think that we could potentially soon see FC Bayern succeed in the Euroleage. In the last few years they have really stepped up their game in terms of recruiting players, management, and also in other areas of their club like marketing and Sportfive. (Team Mia San Mia)
DeleteThis was a detailed post! You definitely touched on a lot of things. I knew of Bayern Munich's football team, but it wasn't until this unit where I learned they also had a basketball team. Do you think these basketball teams that are overshadowed by football, such as FC Barc and Real Madrid in addition to Bayern, will ever be able to be recognized on similar levels? What do you think it would take? I also loved your inclusion of WW2 and its effects on the club, and it sucks that the Jewish members got scolded. I wish Bayern had supported its Jewish members as Barcelona supports its Catalonians!
ReplyDeleteFollowing up to my previous response I believe that with the right dynamics on and off the court FC Bayern is in for success. With the new addition of Sportfive marketing, and new technology they should be on the right path to succeed. (Team Mia San Mia)
DeleteI am not a EuroLeague basketball fan, but if I were to root for a team, it would have to be for Bayern Munich after reading this article. I found the history of this team to be really interesting because I am interested in WWII. The most interesting part of this article in my opinion is the slogan. "We are who we are" is a cool motto to follow as a team and even just an individual.
ReplyDeleteJoe, I agree the slogan is a cool motto to follow as a team!
