SPORTFIVE. Yay or Nay for FC Bayern Munich?
FC Bayern Munich has recently announced its extended partnership with Sportfive, an international sports marketing agency based in Germany, until June 2025. The partnership began in June of 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic and was aimed to bring attention back to the team through creative marketing strategies. The agency is also responsible for securing sponsors and partners for the team and all marketing strategies. Sportfive and Bayern Munich are committed to new marketing initiatives specifically through their e-sports basketball squad. Sportfive will operate directly out of the FC Bayern Munich office to ensure the team's and players' full support and take over all project management aspects.
Sportfive is supported by a subsidiary agency called Build a Rocket. There are over 1,000 employees worldwide and it is a leading global sports business agency. They are partners with 17 German professional football clubs and more than 70 football clubs in Europe.
Hendrik Schiphorts, the managing director of Sportfive German, said, “As a club, FC Bayern Munich has long had the status of a global brand. Regarding sporting achievements, the basketball department is following the soccer department in big steps. We are very pleased to continue to support the FCBB with our marketing expertise in the years to come and to further expand the appeal of this dynamic team.”
Partnering with Sportfive has definitely helped FC Bayern Munich basketball gain publicity. European basketball in general is growing at a faster rate than ever and it gaining more and more attention outside, and inside, of Europe. Partnering with a creative marketing company is helpful for obvious reasons, especially during and after the pandemic where people are consuming content and data remotely. I don't think they are gaining too much power over Bayern Munich because at the end of the day the basketball club is still majority owned by the Football Club, who maintains the most power at the end of the day.
ReplyDeleteYash, I agree with you. European basketball is growing very quickly and with the help of Sportfive. I hadn't thought about the impact of the pandemic and how these teams can benefit from the shift to the virtual world. (Team Mia San Mia)
DeleteBased off of this blog post, I think that the addition of Sportfive has been a great benefit to FB Bayern Munich basketball - esepcially diuring the pandemic. Sportfive has given the team a lot relevancy and helped them grow their name and expand the team. The partnership is a great example to other teams to show how a team and a marketing agency can collaborate together and still have success at the end. -Lilly
ReplyDeleteVery nice post! I love hearing about the new sponsorship deals that sports teams are getting! I'm very interested to see what happens in upcoming years due to the new partnership, and based off of your post it seems like Sportfive it seems like Bayern is going to improve in the sense that there name will be heard and seen more often. For me, when I hear Bayern Munich, I immediately picture the soccer team. The basketball program definitely could use some marketing work. I think that Sportfive is in a great position where they could have some creative freedom to promote the team. What kinds of things do you think they'll do specifically?

Alec, thanks for your comment! The basketball program, as you said, could definitely use a push in the marketing area. Sportfive is specifically working on marketing their players and team to a broader audience and creating a stronger presence with the virtual world and AI.
DeleteThe extended partnership between FC Bayern Munich and Sportfive certainly seems like an interesting move to boost the marketing efforts of the team, especially in light of the pandemic. It will be interesting to see how Sportfive's expertise can aid the basketball department of the club and how the esports initiatives can transfer over into real fans. However, I think it is important to ensure that Sportfive does not gain too much control over the club and that their plans are aligned with the best interests of the team and its fans. It remains to be seen how this partnership will play out in the coming years, but it is certainly an exciting development to keep an eye on. What are some repercussions of Sportfive gaining too much control over the club?
ReplyDeleteEvan, that is a interesting question you asked. I think if this agency gains too much power it would create a power struggle and dynamic shift. It is important that clear boundaries are set in place on what the agency controls and what they don't. They should ensure with the players they are comfortable and aware of all the marketing initiatives and strategies they are implementing.
DeleteVery awesome and interesting post. Always good to learn about who these European teams are sponsored by. I also have never heard of Sports Five and it is always good to learn new companies that are in the sports world. Being from the United States I do not hear much about sports leagues going on in Europe besides the EPL. I am hoping to see that SportsFive can improve the marketing of Bayern Munich's basketball club and get them out there more. What steps do you think Sports Five can take to really get Bayern Munich as a basketball club out there?
ReplyDeleteCharlie, I believe that with the addition and improvement of more virtual efforts like fantasy, AI, etc the team will naturally get more exposure. I also think with specific marketing efforts with players will increase exposure by creating connections, and stories between the fans and players. (Team Mia San Mia)
DeleteI thought this post was very interesting. I think working this closely with a marketing agency will give the club more exposure while also ensuring that everyone is on board. To answer your question, while I do think they have gave Sportsfive a lot of power, I think it is necessary in order to grow the club name and bring more money to the club which will translate to club success. - Carson Trimborn

ReplyDeleteI think that it is a good idea to partner with a company like sportsfive. I think that the company can bring more attention to the club and can even help attract players to the team. I think getting involved in Esports is a smart move as well because the younger generation really loves it. Many kids now are idolizing Esports players rather than athletes now and becoming one of the first to get involved can be a high reward scenario.
I think this is a brilliant idea by the club because of how much everything is technology-based nowadays. We learned in class that there are plenty of sports fans who became fans through the video game. So yes, I think this is a good opportunity to attract more fans to the club. I also think this is a good opportunity for the club to make more money.
ReplyDeleteI think this partnership is mutually beneficial. It helps Bayern secure sponsorships which increases popularity for the team and SportsFive. I am not sure if fans who enjoy esports will transfer to the real team, but it will increase merchandise sales for the eports and real team.
