What is the Turkish Airlines Euroleague?
Currently the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague is the most competitive basketball league in Europe having been
founded in 1958 as the European Champions Cup. However, since its inception the league has undergone
several changes to its name and format. Today, the EuroLeague is widely regarded as one of the top basketball
leagues in the world, with some of the best players and teams competing for glory and prestige.
One of the main catalysts in the creation of the EuroLeague was Bayern Munich, the German basketball team.
In fact, Bayern Munich is one of the founding members of the original European Champions Cup, and it has
kept its place in the competition ever since. The team has won the competition several times and has been a
dominant force in European basketball for many decades.
Bayern Munich has won the competition several times and has produced some of the best players in European basketball history. Bayern Munich has also played a role in shaping the EuroLeague, providing valuable input and guidance to the league organizers and helping to ensure that the competition remains at the forefront of European basketball.
The league is made up of 18 teams, of which 16 have long-term licenses made up of the founding members and
two wildcard spots. However, due to the war in Ukraine four Russian teams were banned from competing in the
tournament. It also has grown to become the most popular indoor sports league outside of the United States with
the highest average attendance of 8,780 for league.
In order to compete in the EuroLeague, teams must comply with certain rules. One of these rules being a
minimum seating capacity of at least 10,000 for the teams’ arenas. This rule change was put into effect in
2008 in an effort to force teams to build bigger stadiums enabling larger crowds and an increase in revenue.
In the 2012-13 season there was a major change to the format of the competition where Euroleague
introduced a Runner-up trophy for the team that loses the final. This was a drastic change because it enabled
second place teams to win a European trophy instead of individual medals. They decided to make this change
because they wanted to award teams by incorporating the individual sports model where there is a bronze,
silver, and gold team.

One thing I find interesting about Euroleague basketball is the rule that requires each team to have a minimum capacity of 10,000 for their arenas. FC Barcelona's however is less than that because they are given an exception. What is Bayern's capacity?
ReplyDeleteThe capacity of Bayern Munich's Audi dome is 6,700 people which is even smaller than Barca's stadium. I find it interesting how EuroLeague team's that were founding members specifically, have exemptions to that rule.
DeleteThat is very interesting that they are trying to implement a olympic type medaling system. I don't understand it did EuroLeague speak on why they wanted to start this type of trophy system?
ReplyDeleteI think what EuroLeague is trying to accomplish by incorporating the olympic type medaling system is to eliminate second place medals. By taking away the medals they transitioned to offering second place trophies which can now be seen as a more successful season as people identify trophies with success and medals with failure.
DeleteGreat article! I find the rule about crowd size very interesting. Do you think that this rule suits the league well? I'm sure there are teams that could compete that can't fit 10,000 fans, and I know that Barcelona is an exception. The rule seems a bit unfair to strong teams that don't have a large capacity. What do you think?

I understand where the league is coming from when they created the 10,000 capacity rule. However, I feel as though this rule doesn't make sense unless it is enforced across all the teams because then it takes away from the purpose for the rule. Which was to increase capacity of stadiums so that teams and the leagues could increase their revenue. I don't necessarily think it's the team's fault I think it has to do more with the league and how they aren't enforcing their own rules.
DeleteThanks for sharing this information about the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague! It's interesting to learn about the league's history and how it has evolved over time. It's also impressive to hear that it's considered one of the top basketball leagues in the world and has some of the best players and teams competing for glory and prestige. I didn't know about the minimum seating capacity rule, but it makes sense to encourage teams to build bigger stadiums for larger crowds and increased revenue. The introduction of the Runner-up trophy is also a unique and thoughtful way to recognize the efforts of the second place teams.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you I think the idea of a trophy for the runner-up team is a great way for the league to reward them for their efforts throughout the season. As I feel that medals sometimes do not justify the efforts of the players and staff due to the negative connotation they have.
DeleteI like how you did a post on the history of the league. In my opinion, I don't think the addition of a second place trophy was a good idea, because I feel like no matter what award you give a runner up, it will always just make them think about that loss. While I can see how making it to the finals is definitely in accomplishment, the losers don't get put into the history books. I guess you could compare this to NBA or NFL teams getting trophies for winning their respective conferences, but they don't get a separate trophy for the finals themselves, and that is how I think it should be for the Turkish Euroleague. Do you agree?

ReplyDeleteLearning about the history of the league was interesting and it's cool that Bayern was one of the main catalyst in helping develop the league. I don't think a medaling system makes sense in this tournament because no team is going to be happy getting a medal after losing in the finals. I like that they have a minimum capacity rule as they are trying to grow the game and attract more fans.
